Supporting Neurodivergent Teens: Therapy for Autistic and ADHD Teens

Many autistic and ADHD teens struggle with overwhelm, anxiety, burnout, and feeling misunderstood. Neurodivergent-affirming therapy can help teens better understand their brains, build coping tools, and develop confidence in who they are. In this article, I'll share why supporting neurodivergent teens matters—and how therapy can help.

Hi, I'm Amy! I don’t just work with neurodivergent teens—I’m also raising neurodivergent children and teens myself.

Neurodivergence isn’t an abstract concept in my life; it’s part of my family, my daily routines, my parenting, and my heart. I see firsthand how much kids thrive when they’re met with curiosity, compassion, and support instead of constant correction.

Being both a neurodivergent person and a parent to neurodivergent kids has deeply shaped how I show up as a therapist.

I’m not looking to “fix” teens or make them more palatable to the world. I’m focused on helping them:

✨ Understand their own brains and nervous systems✨ Build tools that actually work for them✨ Reduce burnout, anxiety, and overwhelm✨ Process stress or trauma in a safe, paced way✨ Develop a sense of self that isn’t rooted in shame

What Therapy Looks Like for Neurodivergent Teens 🧠

My approach is neurodivergent-affirming and trauma-informed, which means we move at the teen’s pace and prioritize emotional and nervous system safety.

Sessions might include:

🌿 Learning to recognize and manage overwhelm and shutdown🌿 Talking about masking, burnout, and social exhaustion🌿 Building emotional regulation skills in ways that feel doable🌿 Making space for sensory needs and different communication styles🌿 Strengthening self-worth and self-understanding🌿 Helping teens feel less alone in how their brains work

For many teens, therapy becomes the first place they don’t have to perform or pretend they’re okay.

The Therapy I Wish I’d Had 💬

When I think about my own childhood and teen years, I don’t wish I had been pushed harder.

I wish I had been understood sooner.

I wish someone had helped me learn that my brain wasn’t broken—it was different.

I wish I had been given tools instead of shame, support instead of pressure.

That’s what I aim to offer the teens I work with now.

For Parents and Teens Reading This 💛

If you’re a parent of a neurodivergent teen—or a teen who feels overwhelmed, burned out, or misunderstood—please know this:

Struggling doesn’t mean you’re failing. It often means your nervous system has been carrying too much for too long.

My goal is to provide a space that feels safe, respectful, and supportive—where neurodivergent teens can build skills, heal from stress or trauma, and start to see themselves with more kindness and confidence.

Because being neurodivergent isn’t the problem.

Feeling alone in it is. 🤍
